Honoring the Legendary Rey Misterio Sr.


The wrestling world is deeply saddened by the loss of Rey Misterio Sr., a true legend of lucha libre, who has passed away at the age of 66. His contributions to professional wrestling are immeasurable, leaving behind a legacy that shaped the sport for generations.


Rey Misterio Sr., born Miguel Ángel López Díaz, began his storied career in January 1976 on a show titled Day of the Kings. Over the decades, he showcased his incredible talent across multiple promotions, including Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, Pro Wrestling Revolution, and the World Wrestling Association, earning a reputation as one of the most innovative and respected luchadores in history.


Known for his unparalleled skill and dedication, Misterio became a cornerstone of lucha libre, inspiring countless wrestlers to follow in his footsteps. His legacy extended beyond his own career through his family, including his nephew, Rey Mysterio, who has achieved international fame in WWE, and his great-nephew, Dominik Mysterio, who carries on the family tradition as a rising star in WWE today.


Although Rey Misterio Sr. formally retired in 2009, his passion for wrestling never faded. His final match took place in April 2023 in Spring Valley, California, where he teamed up with Aero Star and Mr. Iguana to defeat Hereje, Hijo de Pirata Morgan, and Nightmare Azteca in a six-man tag-team match. This fitting farewell to the ring showcased his enduring love for the art of professional wrestling and his ability to captivate audiences even in his later years.
