Canadian Wrestling Icon Leo Burke Passes at 76

Atlantic Canadian legend was an 8 time Stampede Wrestling North American Champion

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Leo Burke, born Leonce Cormier, a revered icon in the world of professional wrestling. Leo Burke, aged 76, passed away peacefully today, leaving behind a legacy that has left an indelible mark on the sport he loved.


Leo Burke’s career spanned over three decades, during which he became one of the most respected and celebrated figures in professional wrestling. Born on June 29, 1948, in Dorchester, New Brunswick, Burke’s passion for wrestling ignited at a young age, eventually propelling him to become one of Canada’s most iconic wrestlers.


Burke’s journey in professional wrestling began in the 1960s, and he quickly rose to prominence with his exceptional technical skills and charismatic presence in the ring. He was a mainstay in various wrestling promotions, most notably Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling and International Wrestling in Canada's eastern maritime provinces. He was also a huge star in Stu Hart's Alberta based Stampede Wrestling, where he became an 8 time North American champion as well as the Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Championship.


Leo Burke was not only a force in the ring but also a mentor and trainer to many aspiring wrestlers. His influence extended to the next generation, with numerous wrestlers crediting him for their success. Burke's dedication to the craft and his unwavering commitment to excellence made him a beloved figure among fans and peers alike.


Beyond his wrestling career, Burke was known for his humility, kindness, and generosity. He was a cherished member of the wrestling community, always willing to share his knowledge and experiences with those who sought his guidance.
