Charlie Smith, Refereeing Royalty, Beloved CAC Lifer Passes Away

It is with the heaviest of hearts that the Cauliflower Alley Club announces the passing of lifetime member and professional wrestling refereeing royalty Charlie Smith, this morning at 92 years of age.

Always the most cheerful gentleman at our annual reunions, Charlie was loved by all. He designed and sold our annual reunion t-shirts every year, as he sat just off of the registration area, most times along with CAC Champlain Bobby Simmons.

"Charlie Smith embodies the true meaning of the words "wrestling legends." He got his start in wrestling in the Atlanta, Georgia area in the late 1950s, first wrestling at Lakewood Boys Club, and then refereeing...For more than two decades, he made his living traveling from town to town, setting up the ring and refereeing in towns, both big and small, throughout the state. In later years, he promoted and booked shows in many of the smaller towns," says the blurb on a Crowbar Press 3 1/2 hour DVD release chronicling the life and times of Charlie.

The CAC's referee award is named the Charlie Smith Referee Award in honor of Charlie's lifelong commitment to the wrestling business and the fact that Charlie was, universally, loved by all.

The CAC extends our sincerest condolences to Charlie's wife Louise, his family and many, many friends. There will never be a greater representative of our profession and our brotherhood than Charlie. May you fly high with the angels. Godspeed sir. You will certainly be missed down here.
