Courtesy on Ben Thomas from http://socaluncensored.com:

Well, another Cauliflower Alley Club reunion is in the books, and as usual it was a wonderful weekend of spending time with friends both old and new who share a love for this crazy, unpredictable business we call professional wrestling. For those who are unaware of what CAC is and what it does, head on over towww.caulifloweralleyclub.org and check out the charity. I’ll wait.

Are you up to speed now? Hope so, because it will save time if I don’t have to explain it all. Upon arriving at the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino on Sunday, the day before the reunion was set to begin, I ran into a few wrestlers already arriving and enjoying the slots. Sebastian Ice was the first guy I saw, having a talk with security. You can draw your own conclusions, but things couldn’t have gone too badly, as I saw him many more times throughout the next three days. After I checked in and brought my things up to my room, I headed out to get my car from the valet, and ran into EWF Commissioner Frank Mott and his lovely wife Marilyn in the lobby. As Commissioner, he had arrived first to make sure everything went well with the EWF table we were sponsoring in the Nostalgia Room this year, and to make sure we had everything we needed for the table to be a success. After getting a quick rundown on what Frank needed from me for this week, I headed out into Sin City to enjoy my Sunday night.

On Monday I had some family business to attend to, and by the time I arrived back at the Gold Coast the place was pumping. I went up the the CAC Nostalgia Room and the EWF contingent was there in force. The Sunset Boulevarde Bad Boy Richie Slade, Tab Jackson, Prince Raccid Najjir, Jake Alexander, D.K. Murphy, Yyan Nakano, Webmaster Wade Needham, Sgt. Sanders, and EWF Champion Brandon Gatson were all up there pitching in to make our booth a success. The room was also full of legends. I spotted Boogie Woogie Man Jimmy Valiant selling his book. The Destroyer/ Dr. X Dick Beyer was sitting there. I don’t care how many times I see Dick Beyer at CAC, I always get a chill up my spine the first time I see him. Ivan Koloff Was there. Mad Dog Vachon. Nick Bockwinkle. Of course the Original Mr. Wonderful Rock Riddle was there with the lovely Miss Denise.

Walking into the nostalgia room is a thing to really behold, and a reason in and of itself to visit a CAC reunion. The room is filled with classic photos of the stars of yesterday and today. There are posters from shows, photos of wrestlers from the early 30’s and stars of today. Just standing in that room and watching all the people milling about is a fantastic sight to behold. All of these different people who would never know each other under different circumstances, from all over the world, and they are united by one thing: an unrelenting passion and love for professional wrestling. They are so different, yet they all share that bond you could never explain to someone who does not share that passion.

Yet as amazing as that feeling is when you walk into that room, as deep as the pride and the happiness shared among those who truly understand, you know that the worst part is about to happen. The unavoidable elephant in the middle of the room. As many wonderful feelings as this love for the business arouses within you, it’s that same passion which causes the hurt. In the middle of the room is the collection of photos of our brothers and sisters who have left us since the last Cauliflower Alley Reunion. This year there were so many people on that display. Count Billy Varga. Farmer John Allen. Marquis de Paree. Billy the Kid. Tito Montez. Mod Squad member Spike. Victor S. Kalfus. Danny Williams. Ciclon Negro. Don Carson. Eric The Great. Moondog Spike. A 25 year young man named Reid Flair. And a man who was scheduled to be honored by the CAC this year, Percival Pringle III. Looking at all those pictures together is a very moving experience, especially when a guy you met or talked to the at the previous year’s reunion is on that wall. Last year Percy was sitting at the EWF table at the Baloney Blowout, and this year he is part of the memorial. His loss was felt throughout the SoCal community, and it really cast a bit of a shadow over this year’s reunion. After the Nostalgia Room closed for the day, it was time for the big Vendetta Pro show in the main ballroom.

I do not have full results of the Vendetta Pro Show, but I’m sure they will be able to be found somewhere on SoCaluncensored. The show had 12 matches, stretched for close to 5 hours, and concluded with a 55 man rumble which was won by local superstar Sinn Bodhi. It showcased many fine wrestlers from all over the world, and I would like to take the time to put over three matches in particular. The opening match of Billy Blade(with Bill Alfonso) vs. Willie Mack was very good. Matt Riviera had a good one with B. Brian Blair. Blair doesn’t look to have aged a single day since Wrestlemania 3. Every year it’s a treat to see the legend in action. Also, there was a great gauntlet tag team match which features the Von Dooms, the Ballard Brothers, Damien 666 y Bestia 666, and a few other teams. Very good stuff. It was also great to notice a lot of other people from the Socal area had arrived at CAC. I saw Dave MArquez, Stu Stone, and Angelo Trinidad from CWFH. I also saw Jay Stone, from like 7 SoCal promotions, and Logan X, Whiskey Fists Macintosh, Tex Tunney, and Vandal Drummond from MPW. Terra Calaway was sitting in the crowd still nursing that nasty knee injury.

At the end of the VPW show, everyone kinda drifted to the many bars around the Gold Coast, but the bar in the bowling alley which has $5 pitchers of beer was as popular this year as it is every year. All in all, this was a great first night of this year’s CAC reunion, and I was so happy to see SoCal represented so well. In the past it has made me sad that so many local wrestlers make the decision to blow off CAC. As I will write about in the 2nd part of this article, CAC is a place where knowledge about the wrestling business is given freely. It is a place you can learn things you would never have a chance to learn other places. It’s also a place you can walk up to a guy like Nick Bockwinkel, and if you act respectful he will let you pick his brain about the business. We are just a few hours’ drive from Vegas, and it’s shameful to see more guys flying across the country for this. All the guys from EWF making the effort made me very proud to be a part of the Empire Wrestling Federation, and confirms my belief that Jesse is really teaching the boys proper respect for the business and it’s history. That’s not a slam on anyone else in SoCal, it’s just a statement of pride on my part. After arriving home this week, I have seen a few local wrestlers who claimed they were too broke to attend CAC bragging on Facebook that they are partying in Vegas this weekend, and it makes me shake my head. These are the kind of guys who will find nothing but trouble in this business when they try to succeed, and then wonder where they went wrong. Those are the guys who need to clear their calendar for next April.

Day 2 of the 2013 Cauliflower Alley Club Reunion began much like it does every year. The Nostalgia Room was pumping with visitors and there were seminars going on down the hall. This year, since I was helping out with the EWF booth, I didn’t make it out to the seminars, but from what I hear they were very good. For those who are wondering, here are the titles of the seminars they ran on Tuesday:

Seminar #1: Dan Kroffat, “Life After Wrestling Starts NOW!”

Seminar #2: Steve Hooper, “Working With the Zebra”

Seminar #3: Paul ‘Butcher’ Vachon, Tom Andrews, Beverly Shade, Bruce Swayze, “The Lessons We Learned”

I heard great things about each and every one of these programs, and would have attended all of them if I wasn’t at the EWF table. Some of the wrestlers of EWF were willing to work the table, but since I’m an announcer, I felt the wrestlers had more to learn from the programs than I did, so I was very happy to stay with Jake Alexander and Sgt. Sanders to work the table. Tuesday will someday be notable because we attempted the very first EWF podcast, entitled “Vulgar Display of Podcast,” and it was a complete trainwreck. Black Metal arrived at the table and myself, Metal, and Sgt. Sanders started cursing up a storm. It was fun watching what was going on in the room and goofing at some of the more ridiculous gimmicks being run.

It’s time to talk about the Baloney Blowout. This is the informal dinner held on Tuesday night of each year’s reunion. The dinner is a small buffet with various cold cuts and rolls, alongside salads and cookies. It is supposed to represent when wrestlers are traveling the circuit back in the territory days and all they could afford on the way to the next town was baloney if they wanted to have beer money as well. After everyone makes a plate, they give away some of the smaller awards.

The first award was the Golden Ear award, to someone who has had interesting careers in more than wrestling, and has worked a few different successful gimmicks. This award was presented to David Cantu. He was a veteran of the US Armed forces as well as a hell of a professional wrestler.

The second award was the Jason Sanderson Humanitarian Award went to Lord Zoltan, aka Ken Jugan. After retiring from pro wrestling, Zoltan started a school for the deaf in Pittsburgh, and frequently raises money for this school via fundraisers involving pro wrestling. Mr. Jugan went out of his way to arrange for an interpreter for the hearing impaired at this year’s reunion, as every year there are many hearing impaired attendees, and he wanted them to be represented this year. He said one of his goals in life was “For everyone to be treated the same.” This is the kind of award that makes me proud to be a part of the Cauliflower Alley Club. While it might not seem as glamorous to honor a guy like Jugan, he represents what the “Ring of Friendship” is really all about.

George Schire was presented the Wrestling Historian Award by Dick Beyer in the first great speech of this year’s reunion. This was not a surprise, as every year when the Destroyer grabs the mic everyone knows they are in for a treat. I won’t even try to recap his speech, as the jokes would lose something in the retelling. If you wanna hear the Destroyer talk, you will just have to head to Vegas next year.

The Future Legend Award went to Bobby Sharp of Shadow Park (dramatic pause), Alberta, Canada. He was one of four finalists for this year’s award, but I have to confess this year’s award wasn’t near as interesting as last year when three local guys in Adam Pearce, and Billy Blade, and current Empire Wrestling Federation Champion Brandon Gatson were all nominated. Mr. Sharp accepted his award with a little fanfare, and when he received his award from Melissa Anderson he was also given a kiss from everyone’s favorite cheerleader. If that’s not incentive to aspiring wrestlers everywhere to win this award, I don’t know what is.

After the blowout, everyone headed all over to the casino to the respective bars, and I ended up in the bowling alley where I watched a hotly contested bout of bowling featuring the MPW crew as well as Tab Jackson, Richie Slade, and Yyan Nakano. Watching Whiskeyfists MacIntosh celebrate a strike is something everyone should witness before they die.

All in all, day two of the CAC reunion was a fantastic time, but served to whet everyone’s appetite for the main event of the banquet on day 3.

The Cauliflower Alley Club would like to recognize and thank Ring Warriors and its owners Howard Brody, Paul Jones and Larry Brannon for its recent donation to the CAC Benevolent Fund. On April 17 at the 2013 CAC Banquet, Ring Warriors presented the check to CAC Executive Board member Morgan Dollar and along with it issued a challenge to other promoters and promotions to follow its lead and give back to the industry by helping those who need assistance.

The fund was started more than 14 years ago at the direction of former President Lou Thesz with an original donation of $2,000 from the estate of CAC Founder Mike Mazurki. Over the years, the benevolent fund has distributed grants to retired wrestlers, managers, referees and others associated with the wrestling business who have been in need.

Greetings from the bipolar weather capitol of the world…Norman, Oklahoma. Let’s of random thoughts and opinion to grill here today so let’s light the fire…Great time at the 48th Cauliflower Alley Club Reunion this week in Las Vegas. It wasn’t a money making trip as my lovely wife attended and did her part to contribute to the economy of Vegas by doing two days worth of shopping. Seriously, we both had a wonderful time seeing so many old friends and fans that we have gotten to know over the years. CAC is a great non profit organization that does many amazing, charitable things for those in need from within the wrestling biz. CAC doesn’t look for publicity as many of their benevolent acts would bring embarrassment to many of the recipients. But, take it from me, CAC helps lots of people that you know or have heard of over the years and I’m of the mindset that more people, fans and wrestlers alike, should join the organization. For more info check out the CAC website at http://www.caulifloweralleyclub.org.

I wish the event would be moved to June as I feel that following WrestleMania so closely and while many WWE talents are in Europe and can’t attend doesn’t serve the attendance at CAC well. Two trips in one month are too much for many to endure both physically and financially. Hopefully the CAC Board of Directors will take this into consideration. If they want to grow, get younger, etc then why not have their only, annual fundraiser when fans can bring their children who are in school during the month of April but are available to travel to Vegas in June?

I had the pleasure of presenting Adam Copeland AKA Edge the Male Wrestler Award from CAC in a surprise presentation. Only three people knew of this matter as it was a total surprise to Edge. I followed such powerful and serious presentations as the DDP/Jake the Snake Roberts duo and the late, Paul Bearer/Percy Pringle presentation so I attempted to ad lib my way into a more light hearted mood in what felt like a somber room and rightfully so at that particular time of the evening.

Reading Adam’s resume is really amazing as he’s accomplished and earned an amazing body of work winning over 30 titles in WWE. However, Adam is a much better human being with a kind soul and unwavering character which even surpasses his professional accomplishments inside the ring. The 2012 WWE Hall of Famer is one of my all time favorite signees as we signed him, and Christian, in 1997.

We loved spending time with Adam and his best pal Beth Phoenix in Vegas as Adam prepares for a five month stint of filming the new season of SyFy’s Haven in Nova Scotia, if I’m not mistaken. Adam’s character on Haven has expanded to appear on every episode at this time.

The amazing work that DDP is doing with Jake Roberts is awe inspiring. I met 3 of Jake’s 8 children at CAC and it was a wonderful reunion for the previously estranged family. Obviously, it was a very emotional weekend for the family as the creator of the DDT is well on is way to recovery from drug and alcohol abuse and let’s all pray that he steers the course and reaches his destination. Jake’s speech at CAC was damn amazing as was DDP’s.

It was great seeing Ivan Koloff who has issues getting around and walks with a cane. Ivan is still barrel chested but like many older veterans is ‘shrinking’ or so it seemed. Uncle Ivan was a great hand with amazing endurance and strength back in the day and is now an ordained minister and spends most of his time helping others including speaking with inmates in prison. The former WWWF Champion, who defeated his hero Bruno Sammartino, always treated me wonderfully when I went to work for Jim Crockett Promotions back in the 80′s.

Nora Greenwald aka Molly Holly also received an award, presented by Lisa Moretti aka Ivory, that was well deserved and beautifully received. If more people, men and women alike, had Molly’s character and integrity, the business would be infinitely better off. I hired her on the recommendation of Dean Malenko and even though she did not fit the stereotypical mold of a WWE Diva, Nora was one of the most successful and productive women that ever worked in WWE. She’s now working in a drug treatment facility in Minnesota and is happily married.

The announcement earlier this week of the construction and soon to be opened for business WWE Performance Center in Orlando is HUGE news for the long term future and success of WWE and is a personal dream come true for me. Back in the mid 90′s when we started the developmental system in such markets as Louisville, Memphis, Cincinnati, and Los Angeles, I always wanted to someday have a NFL-like facility where athletes could be trained in all facets of the business. To successfully recruit world class, Division 1 like college athletes, we needed to have a facility that would fit every need and compete with the facilities that many of these high level athletes were accustomed to frequenting.

WWE will now have that facility in Orlando just minutes away from Full Sail University where NXT will continue to be taped approximately every three weeks. WWE’s relationship with Full Sail University is a long term one that will see the two entities develop not only in ring talent but other roles including technical jobs, too.

Too bad some cynics are critical of this positive move saying, what we all know is true, that nothing will ever replace a well run, wrestling territory that produces its own weekly TV show, has a roster full of positive, veteran talents who want to share their knowledge and skills while teaching the next generation of stars in weekly regular events in front of different, live audiences on a regular basis.

Unfortunately that scenario is not going to happen. Wrestling territories are dead and aren’t being resurrected. One of the most ludicrous theories from some of the disgruntled collection of negative individuals is that WWE “killed the territories.” This inane theory is laughable.

Inept promoting and behind the times, near sighted promoters killed their own territories by not using updated promotional skills and techniques, by not continuing to maintain a great relationship with their TV stations via sound, media relations, and, arguably most importantly, by not developing their own, homegrown, new wrestling stars.

Plus, the advent of cable and satellite TV made many of the low budget, locally produced TV shows look obsolete and minor league.

Old school promoters found themselves in a comfort zone of “this is how we’ve always done it” and that philosophy killed their business but the popular theory of displacing blame is to accuse the WWE of doing the dirty deed. I was there…I saw it with my own eyes…I worked in a territory or two for the record during the time that these beloved territories were dying.

In the UWF, the economy killed our region of the country due to the oil market crash which drove unemployment numbers to all time highs and lessened disposable income significantly. However, the other cold, hard fact is that we weren’t developing any hot, new stars with which the fans could emotionally invest. WE failed in that aspect of the promotion of which I was a part.

The good old boy system of promoting passed away, unfortunately, just as many mom and pop retail stores did when mass marketers like Wal Mart came to town with new products that were promoted in up to date, aggressive methods. In some cases the Ma and Pa stores refused to invest to compete and were hell bent on sticking with the “this is the way that we’ve always done it” theory. People who are resistant to change are likely bound to fail.

The future of the genre is to develop new stars who now have to be trained in a different manner than in the territory days. The new, WWE Performance Center will enable WWE to do just that while attracting a high level athlete from many structured environments and athletic programs.

If one is a true student of the game, one knows that promoters have been signing main stream athletes to perform in a pro wrestling ring for decades and the list of stars from this process is a who’s who.

We are recruiting highly skilled, motivated, intelligent athletes who have marketable personalities and who have an aptitude for the biz. For any one to think that we are signing individuals who have zero knowledge or passion for our product is just silly. Plus, merely having a muscular physique isn’t the only criteria as being a well conditioned, natural athlete with a great motor and a marketable personality is more important that having a marketable physique. The list of talents that we signed over the years displayed a variety of body types and I feel that we are returning to that theory.

Plus, WWE will continue to recruit the best of the independent scene however every time someone’s friend or favorite isn’t immediately signed the indictment will be distributed that WWE isn’t looking in the indy scene which, if you look at the current WWE roster, contradicts that theory immediately.

Of course these indy stars will have new, WWE names so that WWE can own and manage the intellectual property of the individual which is the smart and responsible thing for WWE to do. Anyone who doesn’t understand that simply doesn’t understand the entertainment business.

Adam Copeland was honored at last week’s Cauliflower Alley Club reunion with a CAC Men’s Wrestling Award. Adam was originally supposed to receive the award two years ago, but he was unable to attend the reunion at that time due to injury.

Adam was not on the original list of award recipients, so it was a nice surprise for him and a nice surprise for the people in attendance.

From the entire Cauliflower Alley Club – congratulations!

The seminars presented annually at the CAC reunion could well be termed ‘advanced education’, with a scope that isn’t available anywhere else. Individual seminars by established names are great, but you’d have to hit a lot of them to pick up the knowledge you can gain in just two days at the reunion.
This year, nine members of the wrestling fraternity mount the seminar stage to discuss a variety of subjects. Their experience runs from the 1950’s all the way to today, and it provides a wealth of accumulated knowledge. That knowledge is freely available to CAC members, from the greenest rookie right up to the men and women who currently populate rings all over the continent.
Let’s have a look at the seminar roster….
Dan Kroffat, “Life After Wrestling Starts NOW!”; Tuesday, April 16, 9:00 am
You’ve got many years of life to live after your wrestling career, be it short or long, winds up. In this day and age, your chances of making it big in the ring are slim. You’ve got to face the facts: wrestling almost certainly won’t make you rich, and it definitely won’t equip you with the skills and knowledge required to make a good living in the everyday world. You need a plan, and a plan that starts now. Dan Kroffat lived the ring life for over 15 years, but right from the get-go, he set out to equip himself to make a secure living for the rest of his working years, and into retirement. The route can vary: higher education, specialized training, apprenticeship and other avenues, but timing is the secret of success. Start now…..and get a head-start on the rest of your life. Dan can show you the way, and he’s proof positive that this approach works.
Steve Hooper, “Working With the Zebra”; Tuesday, April 16, 10:30 am
Many of today’s wrestlers feel the referee is just the guy who wanders around the ring and counts falls, but he should be – and can be – so much more than that. Steve Hooper originally trained as a wrestler, but switched his sights to refereeing and never looked back. He’ll look at the third man from the perspective of the wrestler, examining the ref’s real role and function, and how best to work with him to produce a smooth, appealing match.
You’ll hear how the ref is an integral and sometimes very important part of the match, what he can do for the wrestlers, how he can improve the match. Steve will talk about good and bad ref heat, middling the ref, the right and wrong way to use the ref as a messenger, and much more. This isn’t a how-to-ref seminar; it’s for the wrestlers, and who knows, the knowledge they gain here might just make its way to the ref back home.

Paul ‘Butcher’ Vachon, Tom Andrews, Beverly Shade and Bruce Swayze, “The Lessons We Learned”; Tuesday, April 16, 1:00 pm.

Put four wrestlers together and the recollections are guaranteed to flow. The aim here is to spotlight some of the hard ring lessons learned by these four as their careers progressed, and well-remembered even today. Paul Vachon travelled the world learning what works and what doesn’t in many different cultures. Tom Andrews spent years under a mask as The Claw, an Intern, a Medic, and that brought its own set of lessons. Beverly Shade can speak authoritatively to the women’s side of things, and Bruce Swayze was often in serious hotspots with his flamboyant style.
How much heat is too much heat? What to do if your opponent gets a little too brave with riled-up fans? Cooling it down when the heat’s too high? That’s just a sample: Paul, Tom, Bev and Bruce will have plenty more!
Dan Murphy, “The Art of Self-Promotion: Stand Out From the Pack”; Wednesday, April 17, 9:00 am.
If you don’t promote yourself, nobody else will. That’s especially true in today’s indy world, and no one knows it better than Dan Murphy, the veteran Pro Wrestling Illustrated senior writer and public relations pro. He’s seen the full gamut of promo packages, from slick and polished right through to almost useless. Whether they’re press packages or booking packages, too many wouldn’t generate any interest whatever from the media or promoters.
Sit in on this seminar, and Dan can give you plenty of guidance on designing, preparing and distributing your package. You’ll learn how to increase your public exposure, generate bookings, build your portfolio and in the end, advance your career. The package is your foot in the door, and you only get one chance to make a favorable first impression.
Sinn Bodhi, a/k/a Kizarny, “Spots: What, Where, When, Why”; Wednesday, April 17, 10:30 am.
How often have you heard it? How often have you said it? “I’ve got to get all my spots in!” How often have you heard matches described, often disparagingly, as “just another spotfest”?
Every wrestler has some, every wrestler uses them. But the word ‘spots’ says it all: they’re just one ingredient among holds, throws, locks, kicks, punches, moves, counter-moves and more. Sinn Bodhi will talk about the decisions you need to make about spots, whether you plan your match in detail or just get in the ring and work. What spot to use? Where does it fit in? When to use it? Why is it being used? All that and much more from a man who’s acknowledged as one of the sharpest minds in the business today.
Ron Hutchison, “Inside the World of Training”; Wednesday, April 17, 1:00 pm.
Widely acknowledged as Canada’s foremost wrestling trainer, Ron Hutchison set many top wrestlers on the path to success. Edge. Christian. Trish Stratus. Gail Kim. Joe E. Legend. Fellow seminar leader Sinn Bodhi, and many more. In a CAC exclusive, for the first time ever in a public forum, Ron will discuss his 30-year training career and his take on today’s training landscape.
He’ll acquaint you with the qualities and styles of a good trainer, what training approach to look for, the signs of a questionable trainer, and the costs to be expected.. Ron will talk basic versus advanced training, when to walk and when to run, and so much more. It’s priceless advice from a premier trainer, and it’s only available if you’re at the CAC reunion.
That’s the series……..see you there!
