The patriarch of the wrestling Guerreros was Salvador Guerrero, born January 11, 1921 in Ray, AZ. Gory, as he was known, made his pro wrestling debut in 1937 in Guadalajara and would go on to have a career over four decades long.
In 1946, Gory was in a feud with Enrique Yanez and was invited to his home for dinner. It was there that he met Herlinda Yanez. She asked him, “Why are you so dirty?” This simple question merged two wrestling families: the Guerreros with the Yanez. Between the two families, there are 17 wrestlers. After 16 years on the road, Herlinda and Gory settled in El Paso, Texas. Gory formed “Guerrero Resources, Inc,” a business that the whole family was involved in. As “The Wrestling Guerreros,” they promoted pro wrestling events in 2 nations, 2 states, 2 cities , 2 languages, 2 cultures featuring 2 styles of wrestling with 2 television shows on the US/ Mexican border, El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua for more than 15 years. In any given weekend, a wresting fan could experience three full days of wrestling / lucha libre entertainment. Gory and Herlinda would have six children, four of them boys; all four of whom would become professional wrestlers establishing themselves independently, merging both styles of wrestling into a style of their own.
First born was Maria del Refugio, known as “Cookie,” who speaks five languages. The business ran smoothly with her in the office. Chavo Classic would go on to hold titles throughout the US, Mexico and Japan. Chavo has continued his career with a recent run in WWE and he still works independent dates throughout the country.
Mando debuted in 1971. Mando successfully competed throughout the US as well as Mexico, Europe and Japan. Mando has worked extensively as a stuntman in movies and can be seen in many Hollywood hits. Hector was a high-flyer and was a success everywhere he went. Today, Hector works as a Spanish language announcer for TNA.
Herlinda is the second-youngest in the Guerrero family and is a flight attendant living in Arizona with her family. Finally, Eddy, the youngest, made his debut in 1987 and quickly gained attention for his amazing technical skills. It wasn’t until Eddy hit the national stage that his personality shown through and he became one of the biggest stars in the business before passing away in 2005.
Chavo Jr. followed his father and uncles into the ring in 1994 and, today, is one of the top stars of the WWE and recently held the ECW World Heavyweight Title.
There is much that can be written about The Wrestling Guerreros; however, suffice to say that this is a family truly worthy of being recognized by the Cauliflower Alley Club!
